ARES Members Support Community During Storms

Nevada County Office of Emergency Services activated NC-ARES members during the recent storms. ARES members monitored local repeater 147.285 system, and local GMRS repeater CH21 for emergency 911-type calls in the event Cell service was overloaded or out of service. Members John Hart KE6FIQ, Martin Twer AJ6OH, Peter Mason N6ERL, KZ6B Alan James, KK6CUG Jeff Wagner, K6ACN Sean Robchiaud, KN6MMK Drew Mazer, and N6ZPO Robin De Negri took shifts monitoring. The activation began 3/4/2023 and finished on 3/9/2023 after the snow subsided.

ARES Members Support NC-OES

Ten members of Nevada County ARES were sworn-in as Disaster Service Worker Volunteers for Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (NC-OES) at the Dec 1st meeting. DSWV members can be activated by NC-OES during emergencies to provide communications and situational awareness reports to OES as needed. NC-ARES is looking for more volunteers who would like to join our group. See Join ARES link above.

California International Marathon Support

This marathon, a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, takes place Sunday, Dec 4 at 7:00AM, rain or shine. NC-ARES members Mark Triolo N6PVI, Martin Twer AJ6OH, and Peter Mason N6ERL are part of a team of Amateur Radio operators providing communications support for the race. Radio operators are stationed at course aid stations, typically spaced every 2 miles along the 26 mile course. The course begins in Folsom and ends at the Capitol in downtown Sacramento.

Simulated Emergency Test

Saturday, October 29 – 8:00hrs to 13:00hrs

Nevada County ARES is holding an Emergency Communications Exercise starting at 8:00hrs on Saturday October 29, 2022. This exercise will test our ability as Amateur Radio operators to evaluate local conditions and report simulated situations to the Nevada County EOC (Emergency Operations Center) via amateur radio using voice and digital modes. Local repeaters and packet radio will be used. Simplex communications of voice and point-to-point digital messages will be part of the exercise.

ALL Nevada County Amateur Radio operators are invited to participate in the exercise. Specific information will be provided before the exercise. Experience with digital message handling using WINLINK software is recommended by not mandatory.

GV Rotary Gold Country Challenge Bike Ride

NC-ARES and NCARC members will provide safety communications support for the seventh annual gold country Challenge, a ride through the historic gold mining country of western Nevada County.​ Plus on the same day, we will support the 21st Annual Charity Gravel Ride supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters.

This event takes place on Saturday, June 11. In addition to communications support by voice, ARES members will track ride participants using the Winlink digital messaging system. Winlink supports email via radio. For more info, see https://www.winlink.org

NC-ARES signs MOU with Nevada County OES

The ARRL and Nevada County ARES group have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nevada County OES (Office of Emergency Services) to provide Emergency Communication support and Community outreach to all Amateur Radio operators living in Nevada County.
